An industrial port that’s also a place for people

Hamburg has been working with targeted, climate-friendly urban development for over a decade – and was also awarded the title of European Green Capital back in 2011 thanks to its sustainable initiatives, as well as urban developments in HafenCity and Wilhelmsburg. 
 
It is genuinely a wonder to behold how the City of Hamburg has implemented such a comprehensive plan for public space in HafenCity, including around 15 kilometres of bridges and footpaths. Buildings and streets are also secured against flooding.
 
ArkiTours has taken many municipalities and design studios to Hamburg – and our customers come back highly impressed. The Germans are thorough and ambitious. ArkiTours’ program includes:
 
  • Visit to a state elementary school, with children from more than 100 nationalities in a multicultural district
  • Climate-friendly housing: guided tours of different parts of Wilhelmsburg and Weltquartier, where the City has experimented with various types of climate-friendly initiatives, from rainwater harvesting to special façades, solar panels, wooden buildings and so on. Much of it was established between 2006 and 2013 as part of a massive urban development initiative that spans 10 city districts and covers both new housing and commercial properties. 
  • Visit to the City of Hamburg’s municipal waste department, including to discuss recycling strategies and a positive dialogue with citizens on keeping the city clean
  • Liveability: Urban planning and successful public spaces in a former industrial area: walking tour in HafenCity with a city planner. City plan and public spaces developed by Miralles & Tagliabue and EMBT Arquitectes Associates.Visit to the city’s newest landmark, Elbphilharmonie, designed by Herzog & de Meuron (2017)
  • Walk through the beautifully restored Alter Elbtunnel back to the city centre.
