Rotterdam: Urban and residential development is moving fast in Europe’s largest port

Rotterdam is Europe's New York: Skyscrapers on the waterfront, located side by side with historic properties and a city plan that bears the mark of the city being almost newly built after World War II.Rotterdam was bombed during the war. Rotterdam is Europe's largest port, which is why many of the latest projects are located around the port area: innovative housing projects in disused industrial buildings and recreational areas.   • Visit to a world-famous design studio behind two of the city's landmarks. Introduction to their international projects  - and a tour to their latest project for an art storage / depot - award winning - with a roof top forest.

  • Transformation by the harbour, MIPIM Award 2018: Innovative housing complex with approx. 300 apartments. The design studio has taken the role as both developer and designer. Each apartment is individually designed in close collaboration with each resident. Meet the developer / architect studio behind. 

  • MVRDV - Landmark project; Visit in a private apartment in a residential complex of the design studio.

  • OMA - Mixed use project: Municipality, residential complex and museum. We will visit an apartment.

 

Amsterdam: A laboratory for new forms of housing and urban development

The historic Amsterdam, an intense development going on from transformation of olds wharfs to residential areas. Also, new land is incorporated as new city areas.

  • Urban walking in Ij-burg, new urban area with high density in the buildings, good public transport - and lots of bike paths; future car-free area. Housing with mixed ownership high- and low-income citizens.

  • Robot technology as a new construction method. We visit the company behind, and see an example.

  • Attractive residential area on a green slope with LAR solutions, from water stairs to drain in roads etc.

  • New forms of housing: Housing complex for refugees and students.

  • High-rise building in wood with mobile walls that can change function for apartments.

  • Climate-adapted city plan by star architects MVRDV, where various architects have designed the buildings, from courtyard houses to terraced houses and villas

  • Sustainable interior design of luxury hotel, based on circular economy and without the use of disposable elements

  • Infrastructure: 7 new metro stations, designed by Benthem Crouwel Architects, completed in 2018,
